We have a lot of customers asking about the benefits of switching their HVAC to all electric. There are certainly some benefits but we want to start with the history of this product before we familiarize you with heat pumps and ductless applications.
Although first used for indoor space heating in 1928 heat pumps as we know them today began getting attention as an option for American homes in the 1950s and 60s and gained ground when the 1970s oil crisis spotlighted the benefits of using electricity over fossil fuels.
These earlier systems would run full blast while not producing as hot of temperatures as conventional systems and could not operate efficiently at lower temperatures. But as time and technology progressed, heat pumps advanced with variable-capacity systems in the early 2000’s that allowed the system to maintain set temperature points while using minimal electricity to produce hotter supply temperatures at very cold outside air temperatures. Mitsubishi has been at the forefront of this technology and is the leader in the heat pump market.

Homeowners can enjoy superior comfort; environment-friendly, all-electric operation; reliable performance in all climates and reduced energy consumption by up to 40 percent compared to conventional heat pump systems. Hello, savings! But there are more benefits than savings…
Emergency Benefits: These high-efficiency heat pump systems from Mitsubishi Electric can be very beneficial for storms and other natural disasters. These heat pumps are built to withstand even the toughest weather conditions and have the added benefit of being able to run on generators during power outages. Having ice storm flashbacks from 2007? Sorry to bring up such a painful subject.
Another benefit is that many of these systems have a big incentives like tax credits and utility rebates. As a homeowner, you can potentially take advantage of the $2,000 tax incentive offered through the Inflation Reduction Act. Contact Lorenz Plumbing Heating and Air and your CPA for more details.
Now all those benefits are good, but we come across some who feel silly asking these questions, so we’ve explained it here…
What is a heat pump? In short, it’s an air conditioner running in reverse. In the summer your air conditioner actually “removes” the heat from your home and transfers it outside. When you have a heat pump system there is a reversing valve that reverses this process and takes heat from the cold air outside (and yes there is heat in the air when it’s cold outside) and transfers to inside your home without the direct use of fossil fuels.
What are mini-split ductless systems? It’s a ductless system with an indoor and outdoor unit that doesn’t need ductwork and uses electrical wiring and tubing that gets hot and cold air into the space you need.
Mini-split systems have been used for room additions like a sunroom, finished basement, bonus rooms or garage bedroom addition. Because these systems have moved beyond ductless systems used for special applications more and more homeowners are considering Mitsubishi Electric systems for their whole home heating and cooling needs. Many people have found they love these systems because it gives them the whole home comfort control with incredible efficiency year-round.
