What is a water service? Well, it’s literally the underground piping that delivers or “serves” water to your home or business. It runs underground from your city water meter or well to inside your home. Typically, it’s galvanized, Pex or PVC although there are still quite a few other materials that you will find on older homes. If you’re experiencing issues with your water service piping or think you might have a leak, that’s where your friends at Lorenz can help.

There are several factors to consider when you have a leak in your water service. How bad is it, where is it located and how old it is.
How bad is it? Is it a slow leak which needs fixed but is not an extreme emergency or is it so bad that you have no water, and you need immediate service?
Where is it located? Is it a short service in your yard that runs straight from your house to the city meter with nothing major over the top of it? Or does it run under your driveway or under a beautiful tree in your yard?
How old is it? The older your water service is the more likely you are to need to replace it. If you have to spend money to repair a leak on an older water service, then you should consider replacing the whole service, which in the long run will be more cost-effective.
Locating or detecting a leak is another key part of determining what course of action to take. For example, if you have a newer water service located under your driveway that is leaking then locating that leak accurately and making a point repair might be the most cost-effective. By utilizing detection equipment, we can narrow down the location of the leak and minimize the excavated area and the cost of repair as much as possible.
Want a minimalistic way to solve your problem? Trenchless water service replacement repair might be the way! It’s a way to repair or replace underground water service pipes without completely excavating your property leaving less mess and usually quicker repairs.
The term trenchless can be misleading, there is no magical way to repair or replace underground utilities without some form of excavation.
The goal is to minimize the amount of excavation required when you do have to repair or replace underground services.
Many times, if you must completely replace your water service, we have the option to “pull” a new water service without excavating your entire yard. This can be especially helpful if your water service is located under your driveway, porch or other area with solid surface materials. It also helps us to avoid digging near trees which can result in harming their root system, possibly causing you to eventually lose the tree.
First, we excavate holes at each end of your water service or section that we want to avoid digging to locate the piping. Next, we push a steel cable through the existing pipe until it comes out the other end, then we attach a splitter to the end of the cable which has the new 1” Blue Brute piping attached to it. We then use our large excavator to pull the splitter through the existing piping which splits the old pipe out of the way, and the new pipe is pulled into place.
Once that is done, we make final connections at each end and backfill the two excavated holes and it’s complete!
When possible, this is a great way to replace your water service without completely excavating your property leaving less mess and usually quicker repairs. It also saves on the additional cost of repairing your yard, landscaping or solid surfaces.
