A New Water Softener, Sized to Your Home

Ten to fifteen years is typical. Resin beads break down gradually rather than failing outright, so the decline is slow — you’ll usually notice more salt use and hardness creeping back before anything actually breaks. Hard water, heavy use, and iron all shorten it. The rule of thumb: once a repair costs more than half of a new system, replacement is the better spend.

Take the number of people in your home, multiply by about 75 gallons of water a day, then multiply by your water’s hardness in grains per gallon. That’s your daily grain load. Multiply that by 7, since a softener should regenerate roughly weekly, and round up to the nearest standard size. A family of four on 10-grain water works out to 21,000 grains a week, which points to a 24,000-grain unit. Harder water moves you up fast. If you’re on a well, iron counts too — every 1 ppm adds roughly 4 grains to your hardness number, which is why well homes often need more capacity than the arithmetic first suggests. For most people, no — and it’s the plumbing that decides it, not the softener. A softener has to be cut into your main line, which means every fixture in the house is downstream of the work. It needs a bypass valve so the unit can be serviced without shutting off the house, and a drain line that discharges with a proper air gap so backwash can’t siphon into your drinking water. Get the drain wrong and you’ve contaminated the supply you were trying to improve. Get the main line wrong and you’re not looking at a drip under a sink — you’re looking at a flooded basement while you hunt for the shutoff. If you’re a confident solderer who’s plumbed a loop before, it’s within reach. If this would be your first cut into a main, it isn’t.

Usually, yes — and it starts with sizing. On city water, your utility publishes a hardness number and it stays fairly stable, so there’s a starting point before we even arrive. Private wells are a different problem. There’s no published number, hardness varies property to property, and Ozarks karst — thin soil over fractured rock that filters very little — means what’s in your neighbor’s well isn’t necessarily in yours. Wells can also carry iron, which fouls resin and eats capacity. If yours does, you may need an iron filter ahead of the softener, not just a bigger unit. City water brings chlorine instead, which degrades resin over time and is worth factoring into which resin grade you buy. Either way, we test before we quote.
